The young person you are matched with may be living in foster care, residential care, or with their birth family, and may have experienced difficult or challenging circumstances in their life.

As a Volunteer Independent Visitor, you will be an independent adult who is not part of the care system, and you will be a consistent and reliable presence in the young person’s life. You will help to build a positive and trusting relationship with the young person, and provide them with a listening ear, a voice of encouragement, and a role model they can look up to.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Meet with your matched young person regularly, for around 2-4 hours per month, at a time and place that is convenient for both of you.
  • Actively engage with the young person, and help them to develop their skills and interests, build their self-confidence, and support them in achieving their goals.
  • Attend training, supervision and support sessions as required, and provide feedback on your visits with the young person.
  • Maintain accurate records of visits, and report any concerns or issues to the Volunteer Coordinator in a timely manner.
  • Represent ASIST positively at all times, and maintain confidentiality and professionalism in your role.
  • Act in accordance with the ASIST policies and procedures, and adhere to all relevant safeguarding and child protection legislation.

Skills and Experience:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with young people.
  • Empathy, patience, and a non-judgmental attitude towards young people who have experienced challenging circumstances.
  • Good organisational skills, with the ability to manage your time effectively and keep accurate records.
  • A commitment to the welfare and protection of young people, and a willingness to undergo appropriate training and supervision.
  • Previous experience of working with young people is desirable, but not essential.

Benefits:

  • The opportunity to make a positive difference in the life of a young person who is in need of support.
  • The chance to develop your skills and gain experience working with young people and in the care sector.
  • Training, support and supervision from ASIST staff team.
  • Reimbursement of reasonable travel expenses incurred as part of the role.

This role offers a unique opportunity to make a real difference in the life of a young person who is in need of support and guidance. If you are passionate about supporting young people and have the necessary skills and qualities for the role, we would love to hear from you.
