About Placements

Asist has successfully managed and supported student placements for 28 years by embedding these roles within our organisation. We continue to support our local universities to provide student placements every year.

As part of the induction process, we provide all students with shadowing opportunities to observe advocacy in practice. During their placement, students receive the same level of supervision and case management as paid staff and volunteers.

Students have successfully applied and secured positions within Asist following their placements.

Please discuss with your university’s placement lead.

The core vision of Asist is to help people who have difficulty speaking out, to make sure their voices are heard. I agreed to become the Patron of Asist because I believe so strongly in ensuring fairness and equality for all. I have spent my working life in public service, helping people and my role with Asist enables me to continue to make a contribution to help people.

I've still got my advocate’s business card, I keep it in my bag and when people see it I tell them that lady helped me!

I have worked with different advocates in a number of different cases, they have made a huge difference in supporting families to understand what is going on. I have been part of an extensive complex care proceedings where they advocates were vital as they had built a relationship of trust with the parents and were able to support them to understand what was going on and to give the parents opportunity to express themselves.

I am always be impressed by how quickly referrals are allocated. I am also pleased to say that I have developed a very strong working relationship with several advocates, and I feel that we communicate with each other in a timely and effective manner.
